BOB SWEAT’s JOURNEY AS A PARALEGAL & SUSTAINING MEMBER OF DAPA 1989-2006 My journey with the Dallas Area Paralegal Association began in April 1989, after I earned my Paralegal Certificate in Civil Litigation with Computer Emphasis from the Milwaukee Business Technical Institute - Center for Legal Technology. At graduation, a keynote speaker noted that the savings and loan crisis had created strong demand for paralegals in Dallas. Acting on that advice, I relocated, a decision that shaped the course of my career. I began as a temporary paralegal through Support Systems Inc. (SSI), working on assignments that included bankruptcy docket research, document retrieval from the National Archives in Fort Worth, including projects for 60 Minutes, and large-scale document reviews for major Dallas law firms. Those early experiences exposed me to the fast-paced, detail-driven nature of litigation support and helped me build a strong foundation in the field. Around that time, 1989, I joined DAPA, drawn by its professional network and sense of community. In 1990, I was hired by SSI as the Director of Paralegal Placement, a role that combined my paralegal training with prior management experience. Working alongside respected professionals like Rita Parker, a past DAPA president, reinforced the value of mentorship and professional involvement. From that point forward, staying connected to DAPA remained constant throughout my career. In 1991, I joined American Legal Systems (ALS), NY, as manager of their coding and scanning operations in Dallas, overseeing teams that ranged from 40 to 200 employees. I was later promoted to Project Manager, leading complex litigation support projects across the country for some of the nation’s largest law firms. My work required extensive travel and coordination, giving me firsthand experience in managing large-scale document productions and client relationships under demanding conditions. After ALS was acquired by CACI International, I continued in leadership roles but ultimately chose to remain in Texas rather than relocate to Virginia. I went on to work with Co-Counsel and later became General Manager of the Dallas office for DocuQuest Technologies, Houston, TX. Through subsequent acquisitions by Markers Document Management Group, Houston and TechLaw, Inc. Herndon, VA, I remained General Manager of each entity, gaining valuable insight into both operations and business development. By that time, I had worked with hundreds of attorneys and paralegals, learning what they needed and where technical knowledge gaps often existed. In 2002, I co-founded Open Door Solutions LLP, Dallas, a litigation support company built on the principles and experience I had developed over the years. Throughout every stage of my career, I remained committed to professional growth and industry involvement. Beyond my day-to-day work, I recognized early on that many of the most important lessons in this field are learned on the job. To help others, I began writing articles and delivering CLE and non-CLE presentations, (many for DAPA) sharing practical insights with paralegals navigating similar challenges. Over the years, I have written more than 50 articles, delivered more than 40 CLE presentations, and contributed to several professional publications. Most recently, I was featured in the book Power Plays for Legal Professionals, Chapter 15. I first joined DAPA in 1989 as a member and subsequently remained a supporter over all the next years, as a sustaining member. DAPA has been central to this journey. It provides not only education and professional development, but also a community of individuals who are generous with their knowledge and committed to excellence. The connections, resources, and opportunities it offers have played a meaningful role in my growth. I was honored to receive DAPA’s “Sustaining Member Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2021, recognizing many years of continued support throughout my career transitions across various companies. During times when employers did not provide funding for annual dues, I personally covered those expenses to maintain my membership. I have also personally contributed gift cards and, in one year, sponsored the Paralegal of the Year Award, reflecting my deep appreciation for the members and mission of DAPA. DAPA reflects a strong commitment to professionalism, education, and service. It also provides valuable opportunities to build relationships, maintain perspective in a demanding profession, and continue growing through its CLE programs and engaging events. My experience has shown that professional growth requires consistent effort, and DAPA has been an important part of that ongoing development. As part of my continuing quest for learning, I recently received The Legal AI Fundamentals Certification. Looking back, I can say with confidence that my involvement with DAPA has been a catalyst for much of my success. By focusing on helping others and sharing knowledge, the rewards—both professional and personal—have followed. I am proud to be a long-term member and grateful for all the organization has provided throughout my career. |
